GUATEMALA CITY'S AQI
How clean is the air in Guatemala City? Syntropy built one of the city's first street-level air-quality networks to find out — eight sensors logging PM2.5, PM10 and more every 30 minutes for a year. This page tracks the city's air in real time and shows what a full year on the ground revealed.
What a year of measurements showed
Across 389 days and more than 54,000 readings, Guatemala City's air averaged 29 µg/m³ of fine particulate (PM2.5) — about 5.8 times the World Health Organization's annual guideline. The city breathes in a clear seasonal rhythm: pollution peaks in April during the dry-season burning, when the monthly average hit 48, and falls to its cleanest in July, near 16, once the rains arrive. The daily pattern is sharper still — and surprising. The worst air comes at dawn, close to 40 µg/m³ around 6am, when the overnight temperature inversion traps particles near the ground; by midday it drops to 24 as the air lifts and mixes. The practical lesson for anyone exercising outdoors: late morning is far cleaner than the dawn most runners choose
Where the data comes from
From 2019 to 2020 the readings came from Syntropy's own ground network. With those sensors now offline, this page draws live regional readings from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service via satellite — so the city's air stays visible, while the ground record remains the most detailed street-level baseline the city has.
